Noun- An even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.
Verb-Keep or put something in a steady position so that it does not fall.
Equinox- Occurs twice a year, in March and September, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is inclined neither away form nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth’s equator. The name “equinox” is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day have approximately equal length.
Imagine that we, as individual humans, are each a planet, spinning round, and tilting one way and then another, constantly moving. Sometimes we are tilted towards the dark, cold and introverted, sometimes our tilt moves towards the light, hot and expansive, yet in our tilting spins, each time we go through our Balance point. Equal of each we are, whether we feel it in the moment or not. We are always Light, even when we feel Dark. We are always Introverted, even in our Expansiveness. Our planetary orbit is always in motion in more than one way. While we can easily move through our Balance point without paying attention, yet if we listen, and pay attention to our cycles of motion, we can recognize when we approach, and then arrive in, our moment of Balance. The cosmic joke is that just as we enter this moment of perfect Balance between Light and Dark, we then begin to move into one or the other, towards more Dark, or more Light. As this happens we can lovingly say “goodbye for now” to Balance, knowing in our hearts that “we will be back!”.
Today is Autumn Equinox. As a planet and people, we are approaching our Balance point, and then by the end of the day we will begin to tilt towards the Dark (as northern hemisphere peoples). While many people around the northern hemisphere will then prepare for winter and hibernation, people in my little neck of the desert (Tucson, Arizona), are letting out a sigh of relief that our hot, intense summer is coming to a close (even though the temps will hit 100 degrees today), and the coming months will bring warming sun (as opposed to such intense heat), cool weather, and the season of being outside. Those in the southern hemisphere are moving towards their summer and longer days, finally moving out of winter.
Wherever you are on this beautiful planet, and whatever your season, all humans experience Autumn and Vernal Equinox as Balance. We all feel the Balance point together. These two days are our uniting sacred days as Earthlings. We all experience it together. Enjoy!
